The CJ Residence, also known as "The Teahouse," is a remarkable transformation of a typical Dutch interior into a serene sanctuary, inspired by the timeless elegance of Japanese aesthetics.
Commissioned by the authors of Koi No Yokan: A Guide to Japan, the project began with a desire to refresh an outdated kitchen and reimagine an underutilized corridor, eventually evolving into a harmonious exploration of space, culture, and craftsmanship.
This renovation is more than a redesign; it is an embodiment of sensory engagement. From the tactile textures of handcrafted surfaces to the interplay of contrasting materials, every detail invites touch, observation, and reflection. "The Teahouse" stands as both a home and a narrative—a lifelong statement piece, crafted with gratitude for the transformative journey it represents.

At its core lies a contemporary interpretation of a traditional Japanese teahouse, seamlessly blending the living, dining, and cooking areas into a unified whole. Ground-level seating, a handcrafted massif wooden table, and paper lanterns evoke a tranquil atmosphere, deeply connected to the clients' transformative journey in Japan. On the left, handcrafted shoji sliding panels allow for flexible division or integration of spaces. The emptiness here is not void, but rather a vessel for life, with the panels revealing multi-leveled surfaces in all three axes, each letting light travel through them in unique ways.

Beyond these panels lies the kitchen, a study in precision and balance. Oak veneer fronts, stainless steel surfaces, and custom tiling are meticulously assembled, reflecting a commitment to quality and detail. A linear light accent spans perpendicularly, connecting the cooking area with the dining space—a thoughtful design decision that links complementary zones without disrupting the flow.
